Colorful Birthday Cake Scones

Birthday cake scones are a fun and festive way to celebrate. Vanilla funfetti scones with a vanilla/white chocolate chip and a lightly citrus glaze.

It’s my birthday! If you have a summer birthday you know, that as a kid at least they can sometimes result in not many friends being around to come to your birthday party. People go on vacation, etc. So I never had huge birthday parties, but spent time with my close friends and family. To this day, still is my favorite way to spend the day. Do my favorite things, go my favorite places, eat my favorite meals. I’ve never been a cake fan, so I’ve always looked for other treats to celebrate the day with. This year, I present birthday cake scones!

Baking Notes and Tips

These scones are somewhat like my Vanilla Cream Scones but with lots of festive extras, and a citrusy glaze on top. When you look at the recipe it might look like I made a mistake and left off sugar. No mistake. I didn’t want these scones to be cloyingly sweet. I left sugar out of the scone dough as all the extras sweeten them up considerably. These are a great treat for someone you love when you want to celebrate or maybe you just love sprinkles.

As when making any kind of scone, keeping your ingredients chilled is a big part of the process. working quickly will be in your favor. If you are new to making scones – don’t fret! If you work a little slower, just make sure to chill your scones a few extra minutes to help get the butter and cream cooled back down before they go into the hot oven.

Birthday Cake Scones Key Ingredients

  • Sprinkles – Because they aren’t birthday cake scones without sprinkles. Plus, who doesn’t want sprinkles on their birthday treat? You can really use any kind of sprinkles that you prefer but jimmies are the best type of sprinkle for baking. Jimmies are the kind that look like little rods. You can see some in the photos.
  • Funfetti chips – These are a vanilla chip with some kind of either sprinkle or coloring, but white chocolate chips will yield more or less the same taste if these can’t be found. Honestly, chocolate chips would probably work too but I’m more of a vanilla or white chocolate gal.
  • Citrus – The citrus glaze breaks up some of the sweetness and gives a more balanced flavor. I used orange and lemon but all lemon or all orange could easily be substituted.
