When it’s the middle of summer, what is one the last things you want to do? Turn on the oven. Even if you have air conditioning, it still heats up your house and makes it far less comfortable. That’s what these chocolate oreo rice krispies treats are for. No oven, very little heat involved in general. Just as delicious as a baked treat.
I have loved rice krispies treats since I was little My mom made them, and when I was a kid they came out with the pre packaged variety. That makes me sound old lol. I remember liking them at first but after a while either they changed the recipe or my taste buds changed. Since then, it’s homemade or nothing.
I have always loved how easy they are to make. Personally I always use the stovetop to make them because I think it’s easier to control everything but the beauty of them is you can use the microwave and it’s really a simple treat with no barrier to entry.
Cookies and cream or Oreo rice krispies treats are not a new concept, however most recipes I come across are just adding Oreos to regular rice krispies treats. Now, don’t get me wrong that does sound delicious. But how do we make it better? Add more chocolate. I wanted to make them with a chocolate marshmallow and not just any chocolate, but black cocoa. Black cocoa is what is used to make Oreo cookies, so I figured this would just amplify the Oreo taste. I was right!

Chocolate Oreo Rice Krispies Treats Key Ingredients
- Oreos – I used regular Oreos. The possibilities of this are endless though. Any of the flavored varieties would work just the same and you could change the flavor of these easily.
- Black Cocoa – I use black cocoa in a ton of recipes and it’s probably the cocoa powder I reach for the most. I personally use the King Arthur brand.
- Salted Butter – A little bit of salt makes a world of difference here. It cuts the sweetness in a subtle way while also amplifying it. Salt will cut through bitterness allowing sweet to shine but prevents things from being cloyingly sweet.
Ingredients
- 70 g Salted butter
- 360 g Mini marshmallows 8 cups, divided
- 1 tsp Vanilla
- 5 g Black cocoa 1 tbsp
- 160 g Rice cereal 6 cups
- 80 g Oreo cookies 10 cookies, crushed
- 2 oz White chocolate optional
Instructions
- Because this comes together pretty quickly, measure out all your ingredients beforehand and have them ready to add.
- Prep a 9×9 pan with parchment and lightly grease. Set aside.
- In a large saucepan on medium low, add your butter and melt.
- Add all of your marshmallows except for 1 cup, and melt the marshmallows.
- When marshmallows have melted down, add vanilla and black cocoa and mix until combined.
- Remove pan from heat and add in rice cereal and crushed oreos. Stir until the marshmallow mix has evenly coated all the cookies and cereal.
- Transfer into your prepared pan and smooth into an even layer. Using the butter wrapper can be helpful to lightly push down.
- Let your bars cool for at least an hour before cutting in, this will allow the marshmallow to firm up a little more and the bars to hold shape.
- Optional – Before cutting, melt 2 ounces of white chocolate and drizzle over the top before cutting.
- Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Enjoy!
